Dr. Marilu - LMFT
Psychotherapist
“When things are shaky and nothing is working, we might realize that we are on the verge of something.”
Hello!
I’m Dr. Marilu Cabral. Here are a few things you should know about me and why I am qualified to serve you:
I’m passionate about healing and personal transformation. Nothing lights me up more than helping others turn adversity into a gift that they are giving back to their family, their community, and the world. I believe that although systemic challenges are real and often feel out of our control, we have the power within to create healing and change the trajectory of our lives.
I see opportunity in adversity. When we go through difficult traumatic events, we gain access to a depth of understanding of life’s meaning and can realize a sense of purpose through those experiences. The amount of empathy and compassion we can develop for others after having gone through something so difficult is immensely valuable in helping others along their journey as well. The beautiful network of support we can form in our lives with people we feel akin to through healing specific issues is powerful.
I am on the healer’s journey. Through my own experiences in figuring out my family patterns and healing multigenerational trauma, I have a deep sense of intuitive knowing regarding the oppressive nature of trauma, systemic challenges such as discrimination based on identity, spiritual values, and the power of doing the inner work with a special focus on shadow work.
I am an artist and see psychotherapeutic work as an art form as well as a behavioral science. Having received my degree in fine arts in my undergrad and being an avid painter since I was a young child, my conceptualizations of human behavior stem from a very creative and humanistic place. Human behavior cannot be solely reduced to mechanistic patterns. The human spirit has a resilience that when tapped into can create miraculous transformations in the lives of my clients. My mission is to connect with you on this level.
Education and Training:
With a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a focus on painting and drawing and a Master of Science degree in marriage and family therapy my educational background provides a well-rounded conceptualization of human behavior and psychology grounded in the power of connection, safety, and belonging. Having earned a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, and having completed research in treating underserved families who have experienced complex and multigenerational trauma, I am fully qualified to treat a broad spectrum of disorders and mental health issues ranging from anxiety, depression, and mood disorders to ADD, codependency, attachment trauma, PTSD, dysfunctional family patterns, domestic violence, grief, sex and substance addictions, and much more.
I have personally sought out training and knowledge in the areas of mind-body healing, neuroscience, yoga, meditation, and self-regulation therapy. Incorporating self-regulation of the body and nervous system through the above mentioned techniques and resources is at the foundation of effective talk therapy.
Women Specific Work:
Working with women to overcome generational patterns of relationship dysfunction, self-love deficits, and issues with self-worth and boundary setting is one of my life’s greatest passions. As a woman on the path towards self-actualization, I offer heartfelt care in the area of helping women create the lives they desire deeply within themselves instead of perpetuating the lives they once thought they ought to live.

You cannot heal what you do not first acknowledge.
